What is greater than seeing a child smile... especially when receiving something new, something that they can get to keep. 7 out of 10 Grade 4 learners are functionally illiterate in South Africa, most schools in under resourced communities don't even have a library and some of these children don't even own a book.
Read to Rise, an organization that believes that children who love to read become constructive members of society. It all starts with reading. They visit resource limited schools around the country and give each child a new book, a booked called Oaky, written by Athol Williams, a book that he hopes will inspire learners to rise above their current situation and become better individuals. For most of these children its the very first book that they will own.
Visiting these schools, encouraging these learners to read and providing the Grade 4 classrooms with a mini library consisting of 50 books from which the learners can choose from and enjoy. I encourage you to get involve by either donating libraries and volunteering to help out handing out these books and mini libraries or even reading to these kids, the smiles and they way their eyes light up when they receive their very own book is reward enough.
